Are you ready for first grade?

These are some of the essential learning that our children need to master in order to ensure success in first grade. Please practice these skills at home!

    • Identify all 26 upper case letters
    • Identify all 26 lower case letters
    • Identify all letter sounds
    • Read the 50 kindergarten sight words (see list below)
    • Sound out beginning words
    • Read emerging readers (at least a DRA level of 3/4 or fountas/pinnell level of C)
    • Identify rhyming words
    • Write first and last name appropriately (using upper and lower case letters appropriately, appropriate sizing and spacing between letters and words)
    • Write simple stories using sentences that include correctly spelled kindergarten sight words, letter sounds in unknown words, appropriate spacing, punctuation (periods, question marks, and/or exclamation points)
    • Rote count by 1's, 10's, and 5's to at least 100.
    • Rote count by 2's to at least 20.
    • Identify numerals through at least 20
    • Write numerals through at least 20 from memory
    • Identify the following shapes: circle, square, rectangle, triangle, rhombus ("diamond"), oval, trapazoid, and hexagon
    • Solve beginning addition and subtraction problems
