Coatesville Area School District

The Coatesville Area School District curriculum is based upon the Academic Standards approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.  The PA standards include both the PA Core Standards and the PA Academic Standards.  The standards are designed to explain what students are expected to know, what students are able to do and the progressions for mastery at each level. PA Core Standards exist in K-12 English language arts, K-12 mathematics, as well as Reading and Writing standards for science and technical subjects (grades 6-12) and Reading and Writing standards for history and social studies (grades 6-12).

Additionally, Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content documents describe the expectations of what students are expected to know and be able to do in order to demonstrate proficiency on state standardized assessments.  These include both the PSSA assessments and the Keystone Exams for Algebra I, Biology, and English Literature.

Teachers and Administrators are involved in K-12 curriculum committees.  Committees meet during the school year and the summer.  The purpose of the curriculum committees is to address the following key questions:

• What do we expect all students to know and be able to do in each grade, course, and subject?
• What resources, structures, and strategies are necessary for the learning outcomes?
• How do we assess to know if we met the desired learning outcomes?
• How do we scaffold and differentiate our instruction for students who are not meeting the desired learning outcomes?
• How do we accelerate growth for children who have mastered the learning outcomes?
• What are the beliefs about teaching and learning and are they research-based?
• What professional development is needed in order to support teachers and administrators?
