• Welcome back to your child’s last year as an elementary school student! Fifth grade is a big transitional year between elementary and middle school. In 5th grade, students are encouraged to continue to gain more responsibility for themselves and their learning.

On the first day of school, the students are supplied with an assignment book. It is their responsibility to record their daily homework in this book. This will allow you the opportunity to check on your child’s work and communicate with your child’s teacher on a daily basis.

Our English Language Arts (ELA) program will consist of a balanced literacy approach. The components of balanced literacy are: read aloud, book clubs, word study, interactive writing, reading workshop, writing workshop, and small group instruction.

Everyday Math, is geared to getting students ready for middle school math with an emphasis on geometry, problem solving, and algebraic concepts.  Each day the students will learn a math concept, practice it in class, and work on the concept independently.  Each night the students will have homework to reinforce the concepts learned that day.  Homework in math is extremely important and should take no more than 20-30 minutes to complete.

In Social Studies, students can look forward to our very interesting units in geography and regions of the United States. In Science, we will explore chemistry, environmental science, and mechanical science.

Your support as parents and families will have a positive influence on your child’s learning. During the year, if there is a need to discuss your child’s progress or a problem, please feel free to E-mail, write a note, or call the school for an appointment
